Local school children get green fingers

Working in partnership with Groundwork Leeds, a local environmental regeneration charity, West North West Homes have been helping pupils at three local primary schools, Hawksworth Wood, Cobden and Little London, to grow herbs and help their school kitchen garden flourish.

As part of the Worker of the Week project,   Year 6 were given a living leaving treat.  Using biodegradable plant pots, the pupils planted their own herbs to take home and look after over the summer months.  Groundwork provided the herbs and explained how to maintain them.  Recipe tips on the use of the herbs when fully grown were part of the learning process as the pupils completed a worksheet and wordsearch after the planting as part of the presentation.

New herbs, including mint and basil, were also planted in the school’s kitchen garden to provide tasty additions to school meals.  The schools all engage with the healthy living agenda and have enthusiastic gardening clubs, allowing pupils to learn about the economics of growing your own. This was the last presentation this academic year but given the enthusiasm the project has received we are looking forward to continuing our relationship with local schools in the future as part of community engagement with younger people.
