An urgent warning about burglaries in which bogus workmen have tricked their way into the homes of the elderly has been issued by police.
Residents in north west Leeds were visited initially by a lone man who claimed that workmen "up the road" had caused damage and their homes were at risk of flooding. In each case the man asked to be allowed into the property to check pipework.
Once inside the man distracted the householder by asking them to check beneath the kitchen sink while an accomplice sneaked into the house and searched for cash and valuables.
Previous incidents have been reported in the Kirkstall area.
The pensioners who have fallen victim to the bogus callers include three women and two men aged between 79 and 87..jpg)
The message to our customers is to be vigilant. "Do not open your door to strangers, always check who is calling by using a 'spyhole' if you have one or look through a window. Use your door chain if you have one fitted."
"If you have any doubts about a caller, don't let them in. Ask to see their identification badge and contact the company they claim to work for. If you're not certain they are genuine then keep them out and contact the police."
Report all suspicious callers to the police or
Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
